Kelch Impressive in Debut

Jim Kelch made his first fill-in appearance last night on the Reds broadcast as part of a 14 game run starting with the Marlins series in Cincinnati. Kelch will occupy the radio booth with a mix of Marty Brennaman, Jeff Brantley, or Thom Brennaman.

This is Kelch’s 20th year with the Louisville Bats, the Triple A farm club of the Reds. He is normally enjoyable to listen to when the Red aren’t playing. He also does University of Louisville women’s basketball games during the off-season.

It was nice to have a calming voice after so many negative things have happened with the Reds lately. When Aaron Harang gave up his second home run early in the first inning, it would have been easy to jump off the deep end and we think we even heard Marty somewhat restrain himself several times last night when things were bleak for the Reds chances of winning, most notably in the 9th inning after closer Francisco Cordero made it a little too interesting for our liking. With his experience, Kelch made it seem not as bad, unlike the other radio announcers we know who make it seem like the sky is falling. Perhaps Kelch is a company man who didn’t want to ruffle any feathers but he equipped himself very well when the home team faced adversity.

Overall, Kelch’s performance was virtually flawless and it seems like he prepared himself very well. We would like to hear more in depth analysis about Jay Bruce and Joey Votto from his perspective since he gets to see Bruce everyday and has seen the development of Votto while he was with the Bats.
